Bender and Law

I recently completed Bender’s The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake. What a deeply contemplative book! I liked the way Bender captured the essence of a characters station in life. The main character, Rose, literally tasted the person when eating food prepared by them. She discovered this “power” through an innocent indulgence in the lemon chocolate cake her mother prepared for her 9th birthday. From then on Rose is our guide through the sometimes treacherous emotional terrain of her life. I like having her as a guide. I wanted to know what she tastes of people. Of her family, father, mother, and brother, she seems to be the most mentally healthy. While reading this book, I couldn’t help but think about Law’s children’s novel, Savvy. Mibs, like Rose, has a supernatural power. She can read people’s thoughts through their script. When someone writes their words or drawings come to live and tell her what they are thinking. I would enjoy reading these books together and discussing them in a book group.
