I have been glued to my television watching the confirmation hearings for Judge Sonia Sotomayer. She is a remarkable woman with a compelling life story and professional career. I hope she continues along unfazed by the ridiculous grilling of the Republicans who are trying to derail her nomination with charges of racism and that she is an “activist” judge. I wonder what Sen. Jeff Sessions from Alabama is thinking. There he sat 20 years ago in the hot seat while charges of racism were leveled his way. The only difference is that his statements and actions were well documented and factual. The media as a whole have not reported on this irony. Media Matters noted this in a recent posting. I wonder why? Usually the rehashing of a person’s past is standard fare in any media story. Hmmm.
Well the judge has not had the so called “meltdown” Sen. Linday Graham has (hoped for…cough cough) warned would bar her confirmation. She has a tough skin, not surprisingly, if one reads her biography. Coming from where she did to the hallowed seat of a judge, I’m sure she has run across many a bigoted racist.
One other thing I’ll note. It is interesting how minorities who ascend to power usually have more qualifications and experience than their lighter hued counterparts. How many times have I heard my mother or others say, “You got to be ten times better than them to make it.” Judge Sonia Sotomayer has more experience and is more qualified than any judge nominated in the last 100 years. Wow..but I’m not surprised.
