A great American politician comes to mind as I contemplate all that Senator Barack Obama has accomplished, and, I hope, will accomplish (the presidency of the United States). Her name is Barbara Jordan and she was a U.S. Congresswoman to Texas in the mid-seventies. I recently finished Jordan’s biography by Mary Beth Rogers, Barbara Jordan: American Hero. I highly recommend this book for its impeccable research and engaging narrative. Undoubtedly, the best of this book comes from the the subject it takes up. Barbara Jordan was a remarkable woman. She earned the respect and admiration of everyone she encountered. Most importanly, she was a public servant of the highest order who worked to preserve this democracy. Jordan was instrumental in shepherding the country through the Watergate era and combating voter discrimation. She is one of many politicians on whose shoulders Barack Obama stands.
