Senator Barack Obama is on the path to victory, but that path is anything by clear. It has been and will continue to be muddied with smear tactics, distortions, outright lies, and voter suppression strategies by John McCain’s campaign operatives, the Republican National Committee (RNC), the right wing media, and the 527s. These worked smashingly in the last two elections and Republicans were the victors. It may be a little naive for me to think that outstrategizing, outspending, and outorganizing your opponent is enough to win an election. I would also argue that Senator Obama has inspired people in a manner unparalled in the last several decades. He has run a well oiled machine of a campaign that has been issue focused and respectful. By far the biggest hurdle was getting people to vote for him. Even though he refrained from injecting race into his campaign, he is a black man, albeit biracial, but still black. Add to this his middle name, Hussein, his unconventional life story, and his newness on the political scene and it seems like a recipe for disaster. It has been the opposite. He came out of nowhere so to speak and took on formidable candidates and unbelievable odds. Now, as he nears the end of this uphill battle, it seems like he is headed for a landslide victory. I am glad he knows it is not that easy or simple despite his commanding lead in the polls.
Painting Senator Obama as a friend of terrorists, un-American, other, scary, and dangerous has not worked for McCain. Now they have started Robocalling in 10 swing states. The automated message the caller hears in one of these calls is:
“Hello, I’m calling for John McCain and the RNC because you need to know that Barack Obama has worked closely with domestic terrorist Bill Ayers, whose organization bombed the U.S. Capitol, the Pentagon, a judge’s home and killed Americans.
And Democrats will enact an extreme leftist agenda if they take control of Washington. Barack Obama and his Democratic allies lack the judgment to lead our country. This call was paid for by McCain-Palin 2008 and the Republican National Committee at 202-863-8500″
This robocalling is just one of many other of these kitchen sink tactics to distract voters from the real issues. Ironically, many of the tactics that are being used against Senator Obama were used against Senator John McCain in his primary contest against then, Govenor Bush in 2000. It is not enough to be the better candidate in this election. You have to be ready to tackle wickedness from all directions. I hope truth prevails this time around.
More later on their voters suppression efforts.
